ACE aims to reduce this entry cost 10-fold to $200, thus giving access to competitive equipment to athletes that before could not cope, or that were forced to use inadequate equipment. Using common materials, basic workshop tools, bicycle parts and recycled wheelchair components, this concept prototype was designed and built by Juan Carlos Noguera (http://www.no.com.gt) for Design without Borders Norway (http://www.norskform.no), the Transitions foundation (http://www.transitionsfoundation.org) and Intelligent Mobility International (http://www.intelligentmobility.org). This is part of a collective and ongoing design effort to bring appropriate mobility equipment to those who need it most. Please visit our websites for more information on how to help us out! It has a unique lever-propelled drivetrain that enables it to travel up to 80% faster than a wheelchair on the road, and produce 53% higher peak wheel torque, enabling it to go off road like no other mobility aid available. Every moving part of the LFC is made from bicycle components, making the chair manufacturable and repairable anywhere in the world for as much or less than competing products. The LFC was created and developed by the MIT Mobility Lab and its partners. The new chair is the same width and weight as a conventional developing world wheelchair - 20lbs lighter than our previous design!
